The Trophies

The Hallam Chase has a number of different trophies available, so even if you’re not the first into the field, there’s still a chance for glory. The individual trophies and how to win them are listed below:

The Lewin Cup

This is awarded to the first runner to arrive at the church in Stannington.

Traditionally, the runners would be ‘splashed’ with a blue dye to confirm that they’d reached the farthest point of the race.

Fred Lewin ran the race seven times from 1955 to 1973, was Secretary of Hallamshire Harriers in 1972 & 1972, Hallamshire Club President from 1983 to 1983 and President of the Yorkshire Cross Country Association in 1985. He became the ‘Turn Round Official’ in 1984. The trophy is named in his honour.

The Hallam Chase Hill Cup

This is awarded to the male winner — the first man to arrive back to the cricket ground and cross the finish line.

The Ladies Cup

This is awarded to the female winner — the first woman to arrive back to the cricket ground and cross the finish line.

The David Bones Cup

This is awarded to the youngest finisher.

David Bones was the winner in 1924 and 1936

The George Mountain Cup

This is awarded to the first ‘novice’ finisher of the race, in George’s memory.

The first novice is the first finisher that has not finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd and has not been awarded any trophy in a previous event.

The Arthur Brailsford Trophy

This is awarded to the runner that makes the most places during the race. I.e. the runner that passes the most people.

Arthur Brailsford won the Hallam Chase in 1926 and the Cup was donated by Derek Brailsford in 2026 to commemorate 100 years since his father’s win.

The Hallamshire Cup

This is awarded to the first member of the Hallamshire Harrier’s athletic’s club to cross the finish line.

The Hallamshire Harriers are the current host and support the race.
